The School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham is delighted to announce the availability of six scholarships generously funded by DeepMind. These scholarships are open to applicants who have received a conditional or unconditional offer for the MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program.

The University of Birmingham, in collaboration with DeepMind, is dedicated to promoting accessibility and diversity within the field of computer science. The MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program provides a remarkable opportunity for students with a passion for AI to embark on an exciting and fulfilling career. As AI systems continue to integrate into various aspects of our lives, it is crucial to ensure diversity in expertise to guarantee fairness for our entire society.

The DeepMind scholarships aim to empower talented students by providing them with the means to pursue their ambitions in the most innovative and sought-after areas of industry and research.

The scholarships consist of three categories: three scholarships are available for UK students, and three scholarships are available for international students. The value of the scholarships differs based on the category.

For UK students, each scholarship is valued at £34,225 and covers the following expenses:

  1. UK tuition fees amount to £10,980.
  2. A maintenance grant of £19,345 to cover living costs, paid in installments throughout the course.
  3. Funding of up to £2,200 to attend an international conference in the field of AI and/or Machine Learning during the course, as well as £1,700 toward the purchase of essential equipment such as a suitable laptop.

For international students, each scholarship is valued at £52,565 and covers the following expenses:

  1. International tuition fees amount to £27,540.
  2. A maintenance grant of £19,345 to cover living costs, paid in installments throughout the course.
  3. Funding of up to £2,200 to attend an international conference in the field of AI and/or Machine Learning during the course, as well as £1,700 toward the purchase of essential equipment such as a suitable laptop.
  4. £1,870 to assist with relocation expenses.

To be eligible for the DeepMind scholarship, applicants should meet at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Identify as female.
  2. Identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, or another Black ethnicity.

Additionally, applicants must:

  1. Demonstrate, if required, that they would be unable to accept the offer of admission without financial assistance.
  2. Have already received a conditional or unconditional offer to study the MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at the University of Birmingham.
  3. Be ordinarily resident in the UK and classified as a UK student for fee-paying purposes, or be classified as an international student for fee-paying purposes.

Applications will be assessed by a selection panel at the School of Computer Science, considering the eligibility categories and any additional supporting documentation or evidence required.

It is important to note that the DeepMind scholarship offer may be conditional until all academic offer conditions are met in full, such as providing academic results and fulfilling outstanding offer conditions. Applicants should be aware of the corresponding deadline by which academic conditions must be satisfied.

  1. Once you receive an offer from the central Admissions Office, you will receive an email containing a direct application link for the DeepMind scholarship. If you already hold an offer, you will also receive this email.
  2. The final deadline for scholarship applications is June 4th, 2023.
  3. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews within the first two weeks of June 2023. Offer holders will receive further information regarding the process.

UK applicant process and deadline:

  1. Once you receive an offer from the central Admissions Office, you will receive an email containing a direct application link for the DeepMind scholarship. If you already hold an offer, you will also receive this email.
  2. The final deadline for scholarship applications is July 23rd, 2023.
  3. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews by the end of July 2023. Offer holders will receive further information regarding the process.
